What Are The Advantages of a Shouse?
The main appeal of shouses is their cost-effectiveness, but that’s only one of their countless selling points. Here are a few reasons that shouses are here to stay:Off-Grid Freedom
Shouses give you the option of living entirely off-grid. They can be equipped with solar panels, battery storage, and water tanks, letting you live independently from mains services. If this is a goal you’re designing for, we suggest higher eaves (around 3m) for better airflow and robust insulation for the summer heat. Solar panels and rainwater tanks can also be integrated for full self-sufficiency.Open-Plan Layouts
Shouses use portal frames, so you can often choose your own ideal interior wall layout. Many owners end up choosing airier, high-ceiling designs; for example, a 9m x 12m floor space with a partial mezzanine for a bedroom or lounge.Cost-Effective Construction
Steel shouse frames are often more affordable than brick or timber builds, leaving you more to spend on interior finishes or custom landscaping. Our site-specific engineering also ensures compliance with building codes for habitable structures. Why True Blue Sheds?

Got Questions?
Get your Shouses questions answered here
What is a shouse?
It’s a shed-house hybrid: essentially a steel shed built to house-like standards inside, complete with insulation, utilities, and living areas.
Why are shouses becoming so popular in Australia?
Rising housing costs, faster build times, and the flexibility of large open-plan spaces are some of the key draws for many rural or semi-rural Aussies.
Is a Shouse a class 1a building?
Usually, yes. If it’s intended as a permanent residence, your shouse must meet Class 1a requirements under the National Construction Code.
Can you turn a shed into a house?
We can help you with designing and engineering your build and any questions around obtaining council approvals for habitable spaces. Then you have full freedom and control over any necessary upgrades such as insulation, plumbing, fire safety, and electrical.
Can you save money by building your own shouse?
Often, yes—that’s why our True Blue shouse kits are an Aussie favourite! Note that while doing some or all construction tasks yourself can lower costs, you’ll still need licensed tradies for electrical and plumbing approvals.
What are the most popular shouse designs in Australia?
Many customers prefer a single large frame around 9m x 15m, then choose to add partitions or mezzanines inside. Others prefer multi-bay designs for separate areas such as living rooms, bedrooms, and kitchens.
Can you design a custom shouse kit?
We can tailor any of our True Blue steel frame kits to your exact measurements, roof pitch, layouts, and finish—just contact us. Alternatively, design your own shouse using our advanced 3D software and we’ll give you a free, personalised quote.
Can you convert an existing shed into a house?
Most of the time, but the structure may need upgrading to meet Class 1a standards. Sometimes a new design is cheaper than redoing an old shed.
