What is the Difference Between a Shed and an Aussie Barn?

There’s a good chance you’ve heard of the traditional Aussie shed, but what about an Aussie barn? No such thing we hear you say? We beg to differ.

While a shed and an Aussie barn are both structures used for storage or shelter, they do differ in several ways.

A shed, traditionally, tends to be a single-story, stand-alone building used for storage, hobbies, a workshop or gardening shed. They tend to be a simple design and these days are mostly made of Colorbond steel or the like. They come in various shapes and sizes.

On the other hand, a barn is a large multi-purpose agricultural building that you will commonly see in regional and rural areas. The design is often quite distinctive and has a sloping roof and a raised central area, providing extra headroom for large vehicles and machinery. Barns can be built with numerous bays or compartments which allow for different uses including storing hay, housing livestock or working on equipment.

The main difference between a shed and an Aussie barn are their size, their purpose and their design. Our Australian made barns are built to handle the harshest Australian conditions and keep your machinery and vehicles safe.

The difference between Aussie Barn Shed and American Barns

This then brings us to American barns, or what we typically know barns to be. Similar to Aussie barns, American barns have a raised centre aisle and two sloping roofs on either side. This centre aisle allows for better airflow and ventilation and also storage of those larger items.

While some Australian barns tend to follow the same style, many Australians are now utilising skillion sheds for their barns.

Skillion sheds provide an ideal solution for sites with existing buildings, or for those people who want a more contemporary look. A skillion shed is similar to a regular garage but has a stylish single or mono-pitched roof line. They are attractive as stand-alone buildings or they can be seamlessly integrated with existing structures by adjusting the roof pitch.

To give you more space, you can add an awning off the side or front of your shed, giving you more useable space.

When you buy a skillion shed with True Blue Sheds, you’ll have the option to customise the roof pitch, how many doors (and the style of door) and how large your shed will be.
